The Brahmin and his Bible by R. S. Sugirtharajah PAPERBACK 9780567701992
Explore the complex legacy of Rammohun Roy's 'Precepts of Jesus' on its bicentenary. This insightful book by R. S. Sugirtharajah delves into the social, cultural, and political context of Roy's work, examining the exegetical debates with missionaries over the Bible's status and interpretation. Discover differing hermeneutical approaches, contrasting views of Jesus, and disputes over translations. The volume also analyzes Roy's use of the Unitarian Bible and his motivations for translating Hindu texts, highlighting his work as a precursor to de-mythologization. A critical comparison is made with Thomas Jefferson's similar work. This edition includes Roy's 'Precepts' in full, revealing a more complex figure than often perceived. The book sheds light on crucial issues for biblical studies and the power dynamics of text control in colonial and postcolonial contexts. Summary: The Brahmin and his Bible, by R. S. Sugirtharajah, paperback edition, 160 pages, English language version, first edition.
