Ella Fitzgerald | Original Grooves: Ella In Berlin | Black 12""
ELLA FITZGERALD Original Grooves: Ella In Berlin (Record Store Day Exclusive 2021 US 4-track 12" single, special parallel-groove cut and limited to 4,000 copies. Original Grooves is a series built around a genuinely rare vinyl cutting technique: parallel grooves, cut side by side rather than one after another, meaning the same side of the record plays a different recording depending on exactly where the needle drops. This second release in the series draws on Ella Fitzgerald's celebrated 1960 Berlin concert, where she forgot the lyrics to "Mack the Knife" partway through and improvised an entirely new set on the spot, a performance that went on to win her the Grammy for Best Female Vocal Performance. Both "Mack the Knife" and "Summertime" from that legendary 1960 show sit on the outer groove, with the 1962 "Lost Berlin Tapes" versions of the same songs hidden on the neighbouring groove, waiting to surface only if the needle lands slightly differently. This edition is from lacquers cut by Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound. Picture sleeve, factory sealed)TRACKLISTING AND EXTRA INFORMATIONSide A1. Mack The Knife (1960) ft. the Paul Smith Quartet2.
